The Orchard

Well, there are few things prettier than fall in New England. The air is crisp and cool, the sun is warm and the leaves are golden. I went with this family to a local orchard, and enjoyed a beautiful afternoon capturing a beautiful family. It's always an adventure shooting babies and shooting toddlers. It is exponentially more interesting shooting a family with both. No meltdowns! That's always a plus. Thanks, you guys, for such a lovely few hours. And the apple cider. It was yummy.

Here's another complete stranger I got to shoot my last trip to Utah. BUT, if I did know her, I bet:

-My children would adore her and ask about her incessantly. Where is she? What is she doing? When will we see her again? It would probably be a daily occurrence.
-She would probably be a fun person to romp around New York with.
-She would improve my music and fashion literacy.
-Most likely would be the coolest person I know.
-She would probably make me wish I lived closer to my sisters.

Rumor has it this stranger is graduating tomorrow. Wish I could be there. Congratulations!

Another family I just don't know. wink. wink.

We found a truly awesome location in Ogden, Utah, to do this shoot. And I don't even remember the name of the place, but it obviously had something to do with old trains. It was chock-full of interesting colors, shapes, and textures. But still! The sunset light in Utah is too short. I could have shot here for another hour at least without getting bored.

And what well behaved children! (It could have possibly been because I didn't have to tow my own children along for this shoot, as Grandma and Grandpa offered to take that responsibility for a little while.) We live so far away- it was great to have a little time with each of them individually and get to know their personality a little bit better.

Also, the shakes and onions rings afterward were stellar.

The last time I got to hop back to Utah for a visit was in August- right before the temporary death of this blog. So I have a few of my long-past shoots I would like to put up here. Mostly because I have no. clue. who. these. people. are.

August in Logan, Utah looks either very beautiful or very ugly when you're visiting from the east coast. It's so dry! The long grass is brittle, the grasshoppers jump, and the green has been lost in everything except the heartiest plants. But the air is so clear, instead of the moisture-heavy sky I am used to, and the sunset, although fast-fading, creates the most beautiful light.

And as for the family, pay no attention to the fact that we look incredibly similar. Almost, I don't know, identical. Pay no attention to the boys' smiles that look as though they are watching the antics of their silly cousins just out of the frame. Surly we wouldn't be lucky enough to have these people related to us, would we?

Forget baby Jane, whatever happened to photography? I've been scarce behind the camera lately due to other responsibilities [read: kids church moving husband-in-school etc.] but I wanted to share a few fun shoots over the last few months. Little J is probably six months old now (yes? more?) but I was so happy to have the chance to photograph her only a few weeks old. And with such beautiful quilts! I am jealous because all my babies come out bald, and she had the most beautiful dark hair, beautiful dark eyes, and beautiful lips. And rolls. Yea for babies!

Five Boys, One Girl

I had not met Renee and her family before this shoot. She called just a few days before we moved looking for a photographer. I told her I would look around for one and called a couple of photographer friends who were unavailable. And then I just felt like I needed to do this last shoot. I thought I needed to do it because this was a good family that deserved the pictures, but what I found out is that I was the one who benefited from meeting this family- even if it was just for a few hours. They were such a great example of what relationships should be in a family; relationships I want my family to have with one another. Plus, they were just beautiful. Thanks for the opportunity!

I learned a lot on my first senior shoot of a guy. First of all, they take like no time to switch between clothing. Second, they don't really care if they changed clothes in the first place. Third, their hair can withstand rain. (The tux though? not so much.)

And bless him, he brought a guitar. The best prop ever. Aside from the rain, we had a great time, and I wish you best of luck on your final year of school!

As the sun goes down

There is always a magic period of time around sunset to take pictures. Hair gets shinier, eyes twinkle, shadows soften, and the light is warm and beautiful. As the sun sets, the lights gets better and better. And then whoosh. It's gone.

I have found over the last couple of weeks that this period of soft light lasts much longer back east than, say, in Utah. I don't know if it's the moisture in the air or lack of mountains, but the sun sets soft and slow in Connecticut as the sun quietly slips away. In Utah you can watch the very last pin prick of light as the sun makes its pronounced and spectacular exit; a very large contrast between the light and dark.
This was one of those shoots where the light started harsh, and then just got better and better and better. And then whoosh. It was gone. Thanks for the fun, guys.

On the farm

Actually, it really isn't a farm. At all.

I'll be honest. I was a little nervous when Karalynn said she wanted her family's photo location to be at a sand and gravel company, but I could have shot there all day- and then some. There were so many options for color and texture, and man, even in Ohio, it's hard to find a really great red barn.
And the kids! They are all just blessed with beautiful eyes and great smiles (with a touch of mischief, too.)

I love this location. I love this family. I love watching these girls interact with each other; how they laugh and play and joke and dance with one another. And each have such different personalities. Katy's a photographer, but realized it's kind of hard to take a photo of her family when she is behind the camera. I'll need to take that page from her book sometime.

Also good news: no teeth chipped, no injuries, no tears whatsoever! Although my quads hurt the next day from the going up and down and up and down on those stairs.

Wow. It's always fun to take photos of any family with a toddler, but throw thirteen more people in the shot, and it gets exciting! This family traveled together to celebrate the oldest son's baptism, and made sure to document everyone together. Everyone had to be a trooper, because it was a lot colder than it looked, and it was at the end of a very long day of sitting still and being quiet. On a side note: Tiffany, you're an angel in my book. I sure miss you guys and hope you are doing well.

So, it's been a while since I have done anything officially photography related. Moving, pregnancy, new baby, winter, etc, etc, have left me busy with other responsibilities. This was my first time shooting a family in Ohio, and it was very eventful. The last photo is documenting the final moments of poor little Gracie's perfect two front teeth. Older brother decided it would be a great idea to slide down the smooth granite, and Gracie was close behind climbing up. When his shoes coming down connected with her mouth going up, well, catastrophe. She was a little trooper, and most of the photos taken were after this event. Plus, in my opinion, chipped front teeth or not, she's just the cutest thing ever. Just like her mom.

My fingers have been itching to post these for a while now. This was the very last shoot I was able to squeeze in before the move, and I'm so glad I did! Chelsea is a piano prodigy who is off to BYU to continue her studies there. It was very important to her family to get some shots of her with the family piano that she has "beat into submission" since she was five. The piano is old, dark, and gorgeous with beautiful wood details, which juxtaposed with Chelsea's young, bright, gorgeous complexion so nicely. The whole shoot was so fun, and I was able to get my own private mini-concert of Chelsea's amazing talent. Thanks so much Chelsea and family. Hope you enjoy.

"Summer" in Milwaukee

I almost canceled this shoot because, even though it was June, the weather was coat weather and the wind was gusting pretty strong by the lake. I'm so glad things worked out! These two boys were such troopers and were smiley and happy and so cooperative. I'm glad I got to see you guys before I left!

Burke Brise Soleil

Let me explain the coolness of this photo. Usually, the "wings" of the museum are closed in the evening, but to our surprise, started opening for a special event right as we were shooting! The "wings" or brise soleil of the museum were halfway through opening when I took this shot. I love the lines they make and was thrilled to get the unique shot.

So much to love! So much to miss! Well, I have all kinds of aches in my heart over this photo shoot. First of all, I love downtown Milwaukee with a new passion and will be moving away from it in a few short weeks. Oh the unfulfilled potential! Oh, the pain of not being able to shoot here anymore! I think the Milwaukee Art Museum is the most beautiful piece of modern architecture anywhere.

Part of our shooting adventure: we scheduled this shoot while keeping in mind the lighting, not when the art museum would be open, so when we arrived after 5pm, it was of course closed! They were, however, getting ready for a high school prom, and had the catering door open just a crack. So we snuck in that door past all the caterers, steered clear of the security guards at the front, and got the pictures we wanted. Just think, there would have been no Mr.-naked-statue photo otherwise. (He's my personal favorite.)

And then there's the other heartache of having our wonderful friends and neighbors leave us for good. I will only touch lightly on it, but wow, you will be missed Hansons! It's too large of an adjustment not having you here.

Down on the Beach

Hi everyone, I'm still alive, just haven't been shooting for awhile. (For a combination of reasons: morning sickness, heavy church calling, and the fact that winter in Wisconsin lasts until May.) But I'm back. . . for a little bit at least!

I'm so glad I was able to catch the Jones family before they packed up and moved on to bigger and better things. The weather, although cool by the lakeside, cooperated enough for us to not have to wear coats at least, and I sure am going to miss having a beach five minutes away to shoot at. I had to put up the last shot of Mom and Dad keeping their kids happy. Enjoy the sneak peak, you guys! Good luck to you, and we miss you!

An alternate title to this post might be "Hmmm, maybe I should narrow my favorite photos down before I post."

So, this is my twin sister and her family! I had the opportunity to shoot them over Christmas break as a thank you for letting us overrun their house for over two weeks. If the location looks familiar, you probably went to Utah State. We had a great time in the frigid temperatures on Old Main Hill right outside where Anna works. The whole event would have been a major flop had I not dragged John along with me to throw snowballs at the boys. I owe all the smiles to him.

The Art Museum

The Milwaukee Art Museum is my favorite building on this planet. I know of no other building that has wings that open at sunrise, close at sunset, and flap once at noon, complete with fanfare. Rosi chose the museum for the location of her senior photos, and although we had very little time to shoot because of the recent daylight savings time change, we took advantage of the 20 minutes we had. I love the mysterious mood of the first photo. Thanks for pushing me outside my box, R.

I love the candids more than the more formal shots. This past week I had my little sister fly out and come visit and vacation with us for awhile. I thought I'd subject her to a little torture during that time as well. I took her down to third ward and we took some photos down in the shopping district. I know this is well out of her comfort zone, and I agree it's never fun being photographed with random strangers watching, but she did a great job. I can't believe how much she's grown up, and am so blessed to have such a beautiful sister, both inside and out.

Claire was the second half of this unbelievably beautiful duo. She is so comfortable in front of the camera and is shockingly easy to capture in just the way I wanted to. Here's a few more goodies from our great shoot the other night. It certainly was an action-packed hour. We obviously made friends with the geese, stepped in their mess, and managed two kids through 250+ frames. After we finished up, the kids had a chance to run around and enjoy their freedom. L. got a little too ambitious and a little too close to the pond and fell right in! It was only about eight inches of water, but accompanied by a lot of black mud and who knows what else. The last picture is after-the-fact. poor guy. I am happy to report that the brand new clothes actually washed clean, so now it's just a good story with no major losses.

I am sure that I can say with complete impartial judgment that Nora is one of the two most beautiful babies to arrive on this planet. At the time I took these pictures, my right leg paralyzed and I still didn't know why, and John was stressed with finals and Hailey was adjusting to a new sister, but there is still a special spirit that attends a home that holds a brand new baby.

Here is the amazing thing about this photo shoot. Kim is about eight months pregnant. At the time, I am about eight months pregnant. Can you tell in the photo? [no.] Am I being asked in the grocery store if I'm having twins? [yes.] Aside from the jealousy, it was a great shoot.
